James Gilray’s 1798 Irishman stands front and center of the cartoon. Wearing a red cap, he is about to plunge his weapon into an effigy of a British soldier. Though not exactly apelike, this early rendering of a cartooned Irishman displays boorish, orgre-like facial features.
